Privacy & Cookies

This page explains what personal information Machines & Bids collects, how we use cookies and similar technologies, and the choices you have — with a focus on the optional Meta (Facebook) advertising tools.

Draft — pending legal review. This notice describes how the site currently works; the final, dated version will be confirmed by our legal team.

Who we are

Machines & Bids operates this marketplace for heavy equipment, trucks, trailers and related vehicles. For privacy questions, contact us at support@machinesandbids.com.

Information we collect

Account and listing information you provide (e.g. name, contact details, business information, and the equipment details and photos you publish).

Technical information needed to run the site (e.g. a session cookie, and your language preference).

If — and only if — you accept tracking (see “Cookies & tracking” below), limited advertising-measurement signals about your visits to listing pages.

Cookies & tracking

Strictly necessary: a session cookie keeps you signed in, and a language cookie (mb_locale) remembers whether you’re viewing the site in English or French. These are required for the site to work and are not used for advertising.

Consent record: when you choose Accept or Decline on the consent bar, we store your choice in a cookie (mb_tracking_consent) for 180 days so we don’t ask again.

Meta advertising (optional, OFF by default): only if you Accept, we load the Meta Pixel and Meta sets its _fbp / _fbc cookies. We also send matching server-side events to Meta’s Conversions API. If you Decline (or never choose), none of this loads and no Meta cookie is set.

Meta Pixel & Conversions API — what is shared

Purpose: to measure how our ads perform and to show people relevant equipment. This applies to listing pages for paid subscriptions only.

What we send to Meta (only with your consent): the fact that a listing page was viewed or that you clicked “contact”, the listing’s catalog identifier and price (in CAD), and standard match signals — your IP address, browser user-agent, and the Meta _fbp/_fbc cookies. We do not send your name, email, or phone number through these tools.

Meta acts as an independent controller for the data it receives; see Meta’s own privacy and cookie policies for how they use it.

Your choices

You can Decline tracking on the consent bar, and tracking will not run. You can change your mind at any time: clearing your browser cookies for this site removes your stored choice and the bar will appear again.

You can also manage or block cookies in your browser settings, and you can adjust ad personalization in your Meta account settings.

Marketing email — account holders

If you create an account, list equipment, place a bid, or make an inquiry, we consider you to have an existing business relationship with Machines & Bids and, under Canada’s anti-spam law (CASL), we may send you occasional marketing email (news, listings, promotions) on that basis without asking you to opt in first. This does not apply to people who simply browse the site without registering — we do not hold an address to email in that case.

Every marketing email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing is honoured immediately and permanently — we will not re-subscribe an address that has opted out. This is separate from transactional email about your own listings, offers, or appointments, which continues regardless of your marketing subscription.

You can review or change your marketing email subscription at any time from Account Settings, or by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email.

Transactional text messages (SMS)

If you verify a mobile number, we may text you transactional alerts about auctions you are actively taking part in — for example when you are outbid or when you win. These are service messages tied to your bidding activity, not marketing. Standard message and data rates may apply.

You can turn text-message notifications on or off at any time in Account Settings, or reply STOP (or ARRÊT) to any alert to opt out — and START to opt back in. A STOP is honoured until you choose to opt back in. Your number is used only for these alerts and for account security (verification codes); it is never sold or shared for advertising.

Your rights (Quebec Law 25)

Subject to applicable law, you may request access to or correction of your personal information, and you may withdraw consent to optional processing such as advertising tracking.

To exercise these rights, contact support@machinesandbids.com. You may also contact Quebec’s Commission d’accès à l’information if you have a concern.
